Interior Designing and decoration for Mother and Child

I wanted to create an Interior designing room that would let her know how special she was and where she could be her best seven-year-old self. All the furniture I designed for Tara’s room had butterfly cutouts. But I didn’t stop there (as I said when it comes to children’s rooms, more is more). To create the butterfly mural on the wall, I used a very simple technique. I cut out three sets of plywood ovals to use as stencils for butterfly abstractions on the walls.

Wall floor furniture in Interior decoration

I had the vibrant mural motif transferred onto the bedding (a seamstress used the same stencils I used on the walls to create a butterfly applique) and, for good measure, put a butterfly rug on the floor. I also bought a bunch of witty bitty fake but convincing butterflies and sewed them onto sheer curtain panels so it looked like butterflies were flying all around the room. I knew that Tara loved having tea parties, so I included a small table and chairs in the room. I glued some of the tiny butterflies on her teacups and tea- pot, and when she came home from the hospital the two of us had tea.

When I asked her what she hoped for the future, she said that she hoped she would stay well. I hope Tara spreads her wings and grows up to be a beautiful, healthy adult. Cassandra was the other little girl fighting for her life. After she was diagnosed with a tumor on her kidney, Cassandra wrote to the show asking us to paint the walls of the hospital where she was being treated. The walls, she noted, were sometimes the last sight some of the kids at the hospital would see.

We did paint the hospital walls, but we also wanted to help out Cassandra’s family. Her father had lost his truck-driving job for missing work while he visited Cassandra in the hospital. Imagine: You’ve got six children to support, one of whom is very ill, and you’re out of work. Because of her illness, Cassandra had spent many months indoors, so my mission was to give her a bedroom that would let her experience some aspect of the outdoors.

The room I ultimately designed was made to look like a lush garden full of flowers. I also created a mural for Cassandra’s room. First, I used a sprayer to paint the wall in graduated shades of green, going from dark at the bottom to light at the top. Plywood works well as a stencil because it stays in place while you trace. I picked up the butterfly theme when building a tea table and chairs, painted on stem of varying heights, topping some of them with adhesive-backed flowers that I designed on my computer and had printed. (I used the same giant “stickers” on the nightstands I built).

Doing something interesting and out of the ordinary on the walls of a kid’s room transforms it immediately. To take it a step further, you can make the furniture just as fanciful. In Cassandra’s room, for instance, her bed is a giant bug. It has big eyes that swivel to create a little shelf for books and antennae that double as reading lights. Surprisingly, I call it the “bed bug.” The room also has a little gazebo that Cassandra can sit in, just as if she were out in the backyard, and a chest for storing her clothes covered. I used a paint gun to draw flower stems on the wall; the flower themselves are adhesive-backed. If you’re short on space, you might consider buying a bed that has built-in night tables.
