Variations in the firing process can mean that batches of tiles differ slightly in appearance. Tiles commonly come in boxes of 25 or 50, or in packs to cover, say, one square meter. Included will be tiles for both main body tiling lazed edges and for external corners finished edges. Before ordering, work out how many edging tiles are needed, and check there are enough in the pack or box.
Tools and materials
You will need a tile cutter, a spirit level with a vertical vial, a steel rule, a few long, straight timber battens, a serrated adhesive spreader usually supplied with the adhesive, tile clippers or pincers, a sponge, and a soft cloth. Cutting and fixing – The principal fact to remember about ceramic tiles is that they are brittle. This means that once you have introduced a line of weakness, by scoring a straight line in the tile, for example, it can be relatively easily snapped. More problematic, how- ever, is shaping a tile to fit around a pipe or the edge of a basin. Here, it is best to nibble away at the tile until you have the shape you need. When marking tiles for cutting, never use a felt pen on the tile’s re- verse side. The ink may soak through the tile and appear as a stain under the glaze where you cannot reach it. Marking up o To help you position your tiles, mark a long, straight batten with tile widths along its length to act as a gauge stick, allowing gaps for grouting.
Preparing Wood in Interior designing and decoration
Fill any cracks or holes in the wood with a wood-stopping material before applying the stain. The final finish may be of a type that gives a surface film, such as French polish, varnish, or polyurethane. The latter two are available in gloss, satin, and Matt finishes. Varnish stains are also available. These are convenient, since they will color and finish the wood in a single operation. Do bear in mind that each extra coat of varnish stain will darken the color of the wood and, unless brushed out very evenly, the color will vary with the thickness of the film. When wood is stained with a penetrating dye, the color will not vary _ no matter how many coats of clear finish you later apply. Don’t neglect to treat areas of woodwork that are normally out of sight. For example, when varnishing an external door, it is important that at least one coat is applied to the top and bottom edges, otherwise water may penetrate at these points and eventually cause the varnish to fail.
