Interior designing and designing wall plaster boards for sound insulation

Walls appear to be “solid” to the person whose task it is to fix shelf brackets or other items to them with nails or screws. But in reality, when attaching anything more than a lightweight picture to a wall, for which a hook is usually adequate, it is necessary to find out what the wall behind the surface skin of plaster is composed of.

If it is brick or stone, it will be too hard for you to be able simply to hammer ordinary nails into it, as you can with early forms of insulating block – known as breeze block. These insulating blocks have the texture of particles of ground coke. You can tell if you are working on a breeze block wall if the dust that comes out when you drill into it is dense black or dark grey in color. Heavy objects, such as mirrors, shelving, kitchen cabinets, and timber cladding, must be securely fixed in place to the underlying structure with screws or nails; for plaster- board, special fixings have been devised that grip on to the board itself.

Fixings for walls

Simple fixings may be made to timber and breeze block with ordinary nails. When faced with harder materials, however, you will need to drill a hole and plug it in order to make a firm and secure fixing. Bits designed for drilling into masonry are tipped with tungsten carbide.

This can become sufficiently hot if the bit is blunt, if deep holes become choked with dust, or if the drill is used at too high a speed to remove the tip completely. Use a low drill speed if possible and withdraw the bit from the hole every, with the drill still running, to clear out the hole. Use a hammer action on brick or block walls. Breeze block can be difficult to drill accurately because the irregularly sized particles tend to cause the bit to wander, making holes oversize and off center. The only solution is to drill oversize holes, push in a length of dowel, and screw into that. If this is not tight enough, cement the dowel in first and let it set.
