Fiber Optic Products
An optical fiber is a transparent flexible cylindrical thin glass (silica) fiber. It is widely used as communications medium for transmitting light signals across considerable distances. The advancement of technology has enabled the light rays to be guided over a distance of 1 km through glass fiber with minimum sound losses (3.6%, 0.16 dB). Apart from the long distance it also it also enables higher bandwidths compared to normal copper wire. Optical fiber is not affected by electromagnetic interferences and has less transmission losses when compared to metal. Fiber is also used in illumination and many other applications which include fiber lasers and fiber optic sensors. Fiber optic products have brought in a revolutionary breakthrough in transmission technology. Fiber optic cables have replaced coaxial cables made of copper as the medium of transmission of electromagnetic waves for terrestrial communication. Applications of optical fiber can be found in tele communication, data communication and computer local area network.
Applications of Fiber Optic Products
Bobtail optical fiber connectors are termination type ready to use connectors for field applications. They are pre-polished and used for applications like LAN (Local Area Networks), field repair work, laboratory settings and testing. Field repair work time is drastically reduced by as much as 90%. Special tools are not required.
An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is used for estimating length of fiber, signal strength including including joint and connection losses.
Fusion splicers use electric arc to fuse and join two optical fibers. The connections thus made are non-reflective. Fibers can be aligned by any one of two methods: core alignment and V-groove alignment.
