Gypsum Ceiling Tiles in interior designing and decoration

Gypsum Ceiling Tiles

Gypsum ceiling tiles are made from gypsum which is a mineral. It is extracted from sedimentary rocks which are found all over the world. Gypsum has been known to be used by mankind from the days of the pyramids of Egypt. Gypsum boards or panels are also known as drywall (other names are plasterboard and wallboard). It is a panel or board made from gypsum plaster which is compressed between a pair of sheets of thick paper. Gypsum panels are used to line interior ceilings and walls. Gypsum tile became popular in construction business as a replacement for traditional plaster and lath.

Gypsum Ceiling Tiles Applications

Nowadays gypsum is used to make ceiling tiles, wallboard, and other plaster products for commercial as well as residential buildings. Gypsum ceiling tiles being smaller are suitable to be used in suspension ceilings or in other words, suspended ceilings. Since the time gypsum products came into the market gypsum ceiling tiles, are an alternative to home owners for replacement of an old existing product. Homeowners can now cheaply and quickly replace their old interior tiles. It has also become common now to use gypsum tiles for ceilings and walls in newly built buildings and homes.

Gypsum Ceiling Tiles Installation and Finishing

Gypsum Ceiling tiles are fitted to a system of grid work which are hung from the ceiling with the help of wires or strings. Suspended ceilings also known as false ceilings are very commonly used in commercial and office buildings. Gypsum ceiling tiles are available in different designs to give varying acoustical qualities. They have good aesthetic look and different acoustical and aesthetic qualities. They can also be had in several varieties. The installation of the tiles is easy, but for installing the suspended system of tiles it is better to employ professional installers. The joints, where two tiles meet, are filled with a special a compound and then a drywall tape is used to cover it. To conceal the joint the tape is coated several times. To even out unevenness sand paper is used to make the surface smooth and then a primer is applied as a base for final painting.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The main advantages of gypsum ceiling tiles over other types of ceiling tiles are that they are comparatively easy to install and also they are cheaper. Though it is recommended that only qualified and skillful professional should be employed for installation gypsum ceiling tiles, it is possible for homeowners to install and finish the tiles themselves (but not the ceiling grid work needed for mounting the tiles). The disadvantages to having gypsum ceilings tiles are that its sound absorption qualities are not quite good. Therefore when soundproofing is important the customer may prefer other types of ceiling tiles. Also, gypsum tiles are not waterproof. For damp spaces like bathrooms or basements where moisture content is high, the gypsum ceiling tiles must be treated with moisture resistant chemical.

Guaranteed Office Noise Control through Soundproofing Materials

Guaranteed Office Noise Control through Soundproofing Materials

Any sound that is unwanted is perceived as a noise. When there is an excessive amount of unwanted sounds there can be destructive effects, which are presently known as noise pollution. There are three categories of adverse noise effects, psychological, physiological, and communicative. Noise pollution is a difficult problem and a disturbing fact showed by surveys is that continually noise levels are rising in cities. There are two ways of sound transmission inside buildings. Firstly, the sound originating from mechanical noise or human activity within the building travels airborne through ceiling, walls, or floor. Human activity sounds include amplified systems or loud voice. Sound produced by generators, elevators, air conditioning systems and so on is mechanical noise. Secondly, the transmission of interior sound is not through air, but through the building itself. It is easier to reduce the former than the latter through ceiling or wall assemblies meeting particular established performance standards.

Importance of Soundproofing in an Office

According to statistics, millions of office staff gets exposed to noise and hence they undergo all the risks that come along. Accidents and work-related stress which occur due to masked warning signals are just two of them. For the employees noise indicates a safety issue and also a productivity issue. For working, the office must be a calm place and in an office having good acoustics employees can concentrate and not be distracted. Soundproofing is the reduction in the intensity of sounds. It can be achieved in various ways. Between the source and the receiver the distance may be increased, using sound baffles as damping structures, blocking or absorption of sound energy using noise barriers, or activation of anti-noise generators. There are two ways in which soundproofing can affect noise. It can be either reduced or absorbed. Noise reduction indicates usage of intervening objects to block the sound wave passage. The suppression of echoes and reverberation pertains to the absorption of noise.

Soundproofing Materials

There can be many acoustic challenges in an office environment. If the office sound levels affect productivity and efficiency, the good news is that solutions of controlling office noise are there. Many soundproofing materials are there which improve the quality of sound inside the room and sound transfer from one room to another is eliminated. For a quiet environment office noise control is needed where in their work employees can concentrate and be efficient. An important part is played by soundproofing materials in office noise control due to the failure of other methods to show efficiency. Soundproofing materials are not only a useful barrier in blocking noise, but their appearance is also excellent. Your place of work gets an aesthetics touch using soundproofing materials which are fire rated.

Office interior designing and decoration Raised Access Floors for convenience

Where is a Raised Access Floor Used?
Raised access floors in interior designing and decoration have become a common feature today in many organizations where there is need for raised levels on account of their activities. Examples include: financial and insurance offices, call centers, data processing centers, large computer room setups where voluminous processing of electronic data is done, e.g. financial information, customer information, and telecom exchanges. Raised flooring is also installed in schools, universities, libraries and major archive areas. Retail facilities like department stores have started increasingly using raised floors coated with special finishes.
Benefits of Using Raised Access Floors
Raised access floors have the following benefits: You can easily access the service points of power, telecom, and data services. This is important for modern buildings having large volume of these services. The underfloor space serves as a large passage for HVAC systems. When there is need for frequent changeover of offices to new occupants the layout needs a churn and that would mean redirection of services. Raised access floors provide easy access to the services necessary for maintenance, upgrading, rerouting etc.

Kitchen and Bathroom Interior designing Painting tips and guidance

Painting Tips and Guidance for Kitchen and Bathroom interior designing

Top coats are available in gloss, silk, and paint matt finishes and some have additives, such as polyurethane or polyester, to make the paint more scratch and knock resistant. The g loss type of top coat may be liquid, in which case watch out for runs, or non-drip with a jelly-like consistency. Top coat will hide an under color only if it is a self- undercoating gloss; otherwise use a separate undercoat. Emulsion paint Designed to cover large areas, such as wall and ceilings. Because it is water-based, emulsion is not suitable for bare wood, since i may cause the grain to rise. Liquid emulsion comes in a can, while semi-solid emulsion comes in a tray designed for a roller. The act of rolling soften the paint enough to spread it. Main paint finishes are vinyl matt and vinyl silk.

Eggshell paint

This oil-based paint provides a more durability
1 Undercoat primer
2 Universal undercoat
3 Liquid gloss top coat
4 Non-drip gloss top coat
5 Vinyl matt emulsion
6 Textured emulsion
7 Red masonry paint
8 Rust-resistant paint surface than emulsion
and it is suitable for use on bare wood- work as well as walls. It has a slightly shinier finish than emulsion but is much less shiny than gloss.
Eggshell paint is particularly useful in rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms interior designing, since it is resistant to steam and condensation and can be wiped down. Rust-resistant paint An enamel-formulated paint that inhibits the penetration of rust.

Using aerosol paints

Paint in aerosol cans is ideal for small areas, touching-up or repair jobs, stenciling, and painting awkward objects such as the many different surfaces and twists and turns of wrought iron railings or gates. The range of colors is not as extensive as you will find for traditional paints, since the more subtle tones are not available. Aerosol paints are not intended to be used for painting large areas. Shake the can well before use and needed. Available in a smooth or indented “hammered” finish.

Enamel and lacquer paint

A very finely ground paint with a very high-gloss finish. No primer or undercoat is needed on wood or metal and it is quite safe to use in a nursery. Tile red paint This type of paint is very useful for brightening up old brickwork or for giving a decorative finish to tiled sills. Tile red paint can be used inside or outdoors. hold it at the recommended distance from the surface. Apply the paint in parallel bands, never in an arc. Apply only a very thin coat, allow it to dry, and build up further coats.
Because aerosol paint is released as a fine spray, objects are best taken outside for painting. Choose a still day to avoid too much paint drift. Protect the area around the object being painted with old sheets or newspapers. If you do have to work indoors, over a period of time, it is best to wear a protective mask . Radiator enamel Specially formulated to hold a pure- white tone and not yellow even under high temperatures.

Heat-resisting paint

This type of metallic paint is available in a limited range of colors and it will resist heat up to 250°C  without discoloring. No primer needed. Textured paint This special paint or compound is spread in a thick layer on walls or ceilings and provides an easy way to hide joins in plasterboard and any visible fixing nails. Lay the paint on thickly with a textured roller. Alternatively, apply it with an ordinary roller and, before the paint starts to dry, use a rubber-bristled stippling brush or a special toothed brush or comb to produce a variety of different effects. Note that textured paint is a permanent form of decoration and is difficult to remove.

Choosing paint Quantities and application Painting in progress Painting faults Decorative paint materials Paint effects Stenciling Wall coverings Measuring up Pasting and hanging Ceilings Problem areas Wallpaper borders Ceramic tiles Cutting and fixing Awkward areas Splash backs and showers Textured tiles Wood finishes  Choosing paint although there are different types and many brands of paint available, most of the ones you are likely to use around your home fall into one of two main types: oil-based and emulsion.
Paints come in a bewilderingly wide range of colors, and you can purchased them either as pre-mixed colours or have them mixed to order. Colour cards and sample pots will help you make your choice. Which paint? Oil-based and emulsion paints are available in Matt, eggshell or silk, and gloss. Some primers and undercoats may be either oil-based or emulsion. Emulsion paints have some obvious advantages: they dry quickly, have little odor, and brushes and rollers are easy to clean.

Oil-based paint

. They have a typical paint smell that may linger for some time.
• They are generally thinned with white spirit.
They take several hours to dry.
• They may be liquid or “non-drip” varieties.

Emulsion

• They have little or no odor, and what there is soon disappears.
• They dry quickly – usually in about an hour, allowing two or more coats to be applied in a single day. • They are thinned with water.
• They are usually non-drip.

Types of paint

Traditionally, painting involves a three-step application of primer, undercoat, and top coat. An overview of which paint to choose for which job is outlined below, although not every type of paint available has been illustrated. Primer This type of paint seals the pores of a surface to prevent subsequent layers of paint sinking in. Primers are available for wood, metal, and plaster, but universal primers will suit all three types of surface.

There are also aluminium primers for surfaces that need a high level of protection and quick-primers for rapid drying. It is usually best to work with the same brand of primer, undercoat, and top coat, since they will have been formulated to work well together. Undercoat A paint formulated to obliterate the previous colour and give body to the next coating. Some gloss paints are self-undercoating. Top coat This is a purely protective coating that is often quite thin.
Interior game provides complete solution for the home designing and decoration in interior matters. In Interior designing and decoration living room plays a major role as it receives the guests and relatives first. Hence living room interior designing and decoration is the most important part of the interior designing and decoration. Painting the areas in the Living room is the most obvious thing in the interior designing and decoration.

Paint brand and the use in surfaces guidance by the interior designers -How to prepare the wall for painting?

The glaze doesn’t dry as quickly as ordinary oil-based paints, giving you more time to move the paint around. Mixing top coats enables you to create your own tones and shades of color – the color may come from household paint or you can add extra pigment. Add powder color or artist’s acrylic paints to water-based paints, and artist’s oil colors to oil-based paints. Always experiment with the paint to try out the effect and test it before you start.
The brand of paint you use, the porosity of the surface, even the weather can affect the result, so there are no hard and fast rules for the proportion of paint. You will need special tools for some of the effects shown on  s 62-65. For example, natural sea sponges are essential for applying a sponged finish, and you can experiment with rag, paper or even plastic bags for a ragged or rag-rolled effect.
For the trompe l’oeil effects which imitate natural materials such as marble or tortoise- shell, you will need a selection of soft artist’s brushes, and there are special comb-like graining tools for creating wood effects. Have a selection of old jam jars and paint kettles or clean tins to mix the various stages. Always mix sufficient glaze to cover the whole of the area to be painted. Described below are some of the most frequently used techniques for decorative pain t effects.
 MIXING A GLAZE
Suggested proportions for a mixed glaze are: 1-2 parts eggshell paint, tinted with artist’s oil 60 colors if necessary, mixed with 5 parts oil- based glaze, thinned with 3-4 parts white spirit or turpentine. First prepare a tint by blending artist’s oil color into white or colored oil-based eggshell paint. If you need several batches of glaze in graduated tones, mix all the tints at the same time to ensure evenly graded colors. Add the transparent, oil-based glaze, stirring in just a little to start with, then adding more. A large metal spoon is useful for ladling out the glaze. You will need at least twice as much glaze as paint. Finally thin the paint with white spirit, adding it gradually and testing the consistency until you get a creamy texture.
SPONGING
This effect is quick and easy to create using ordinary emulsion paint. Choose closely related colors for a subtle effect, or contrasting colors for a more mottled look. Tryout several combinations by mixing small quantities of color to start with, until you are happy with the balance of colors. Prepare the wall in the usual way (  209) and apply a base coat of matt or silk-finish emulsion with a brush, roller or pad. Choose a pale color for the base coat, and do not be too meticulous in getting an even finish. Slightly uneven bases will not Shawnee the final finish is applied. Leave the wall to dry completely.
Take the first of your chosen top coat colors and thin with a little water. A paint roller tray makes an ideal paint kettle for mixing and holding the paint while you work. Dip the flattest side of a damp, natural sponge in the paint and dab it on the ribbed part of the paint tray to remove excess paint. Then dab the sponge lightly over a test surface (lining paper is ideal for this). This takes any heavy drops of paint off the sponge and gives you a chance to test the amount of pressure you need to apply.
Apply the paint to the wall, dabbing it on with the sponge until the effect starts to fade. Use a slightly rolling motion each time you dab on the paint and twist your hand to a different angle each time you lift the sponge. This gives an all-over effect without any obvious pattern from the shape of the sponge. Don’t twist the sponge while it is in contact with the surface of the wall, as this will give smears and swirls. Cover the whole wall with the first color, and then repeat the process with a second color.

On a reasonably large wall, you will find that the first color is dry by the time you get back to the starting point. If required, apply further coats, either of the first color or of other colors, until the wall is evenly covered.

Effects in painting interiors- step by step tips and guidance by the designers

COLOR WASHING

Paint a base coat of matt or silk emulsion. Allow to dry. Using the same color, or a slightly different tone, mix a wash of emulsion and water in equal parts. Then gradually increase the water to make a thin color which will not fall in heavy droplets down the wall but which allows the base color to show through when it is applied to the wall. Test the wash, and then apply it using a wide brush, with long, sweeping strokes. Further coats can be applied in toning colors. For a more durable finish, try using a subtly tinted, thinned glaze as a wash over the surface.

RAGGING

Apply a base coat of oil-based eggshell in a medium to pale tone. Leave until completely dry. Prepare a large batch of tinted and thinned glaze in a darker color. Have several white lint-free cloths ready to work with. Cut them from the same piece of fabric, making each one about 40cm(15 in) square so they are easy to handle. Ragging may also be worked in emulsion using the same base coat and top coat as for sponging.

Scrunch up a piece of cloth. Dip the cloth in the paint and remove excess paint by padding it on a piece of paper or the ribbed part of a roller tray if you are using that as a paint kettle. Then dab the rag over the surface of the wall, applying even pressure and recharging the rag when necessary. If the rag becomes clogged with paint, both refold and use a cleaner part of the rag, or use a clean rag. You can experiment with substitutes for the rag, such as screwed up lining paper or even a plastic bag. Make sure that you can achieve the same effect all over the surface: if the paper becomes clogged with paint, you must have more of the same quality to continue over the surface.

DISTRESSED EFFECT

Apply a base coat of matt, gloss or eggshell oil- based paint and allows drying. Mix a batch of glaze in a deeper tone, or in a similar or contrasting shade. Prepare some squares of lint-free rag and moisten the first with white spirit. Don’t soak all the rage at once – the white spirit evaporates quickly, and they are a fire risk. Apply the glaze quickly, ensuring you work it into the recesses of the surface you are painting.

Cover an area a couple of meters (yards) square or a length of skirting or architrave a couple of meters (yards) long. Wipe the glaze off the raised part of the surface with the moistened cloth, leave to dry. For a graded effect, repeat the process, using a darker batch of glaze and wiping off slightly more to reveal the first color beneath.
