A platform bed, for instance, works perfectly in a bedroom interiors with low eight-foot ceilings. If it’s high, you’ll have room for taller pieces-things like a four-poster bed and really high curtains. Next, look to see if the room is naturally well balanced. Symmetry and balance make a room feel like its working. Not everything has to be so cookie-cutter perfect that if you cut a room in half each side would match, but there should be some equilibrium so that the room doesn’t have all the detail or large features on one side. (If you need an example, look no further than the bedroom: That’s the reason we have lamps on both sides of the bed.) If symmetry isn’t built into the room, you may need to choose your furnishings to create it.

Balance is a little tricky to describe, but you’ll know it when you see it. Say, for instance, that there is a window to the left of the spot where you want to place your couch, but no window to the right. Instead of placing two end tables and lamps on either side of the couch as you might normally do, maybe you just need to opt for an end table and lamp on the right side to balance out the window. These are the kinds of things to think about before you choose your furnishings. While you’re surveying the room, check out whether there is any space that was previously wasted. Was there some awkward area (usually wall space) in the room’s previous incarnation that you never knew what to do with? Think about how you might use this space.

Can you add shelving or put up an entertainment center? Hang a piece of art or put up picture ledges for displaying photos? Carve out a cubbyhole in the wall where you can display something meaningful to you or turn it into an indoor “window” that lets light into the next room? Now think about what the room is really used for. If it’s a bedroom, maybe you only sleep there, but maybe you also use it as a place to watch TV or read. Maybe it’s the room where the whole family hangs out. Living rooms, in particular, get used for so many different things. Some are primarily for entertaining. Some are the site for all music and movie enjoyment. Some are game rooms. Offices generally have one purpose-work-however, what kind of work will you be doing in there? And what kinds of work paraphernalia will you need to store there?

To create the wallpaper I took pictures of a friend of mine playing a bass guitar and singing into a microphone. I asked her to get outrageous and put some energy into it. I then downloaded the images.

The most important thing in this room is what you don’t see. We installed a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter to help protect Sierra’s fragile immune system from germs.

You don’t have to be a music lover to see the beauty in instruments hanging on the wall. Instead of stashing your guitar, flute, or tuba under the bed, consider displaying it as art. SO you want to be a rock and roll star: Sierra has musical ambitions, but she’s also still a little girl. Flowers, butterflies, and plenty of pink keep the vibe feminine, into my computer and handed it off to a custom wallpaper maker. The result was pretty outrageous! That said, when you have something as wild and crazy as a larger-than-life chick rocking out on your walls, it’s in your best interest to tone down the rest of the room. And that’s what I did. The palette was limited to three colors-hot pink, black, and white- and all the furnishings kept fairly plain (though the white lacquer keeps them from looking too plain).

As for the art, it’s just a few guitars: great to look at and, if Sierra gets inspired, available for her to play. And I really do hope that she gets inspired. Although the music of others brings her great joy (and she was completely wowed when I got her a guitar signed by Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day), I was hoping that looking up from her bed and seeing a woman making music would motivate her to keep up with her own songs. I can’t wait to be the guy in the front row at her concert checking out the band.

Sound Barrier Decouple

The design of barrier decouple is to be a simple noise blocker. The product weighs 1LB per square foot, 3/8″ thick, and is available in in two different roll sizes – 54″ × 3′ (135 square feet) and 54″ × 20′ (90 square feet). It can be cut easily with a razor blade or a sharp scissors and just placed at the rear of the existing ceiling tiles. To the ceiling considerable amount of weight is added due to this. So if your tiles are 2′ x 4′ tiles, across the center of the tile adding a T-bar cross beam is recommended so that the added weight does not cause the existing tile to bend. The STC rating of the barrier decouple is 26, meaning that an average of 26 DBA is stopped from passing through it.

The product is comprised of a 1/8″ mass loaded vinyl noise barrier stuck to a ¼″ polyurethane foam decouple which holds the vinyl away from the ceiling tiles and T-bar grid. The same amount of sound will be blocked by the 3/8″ thick, 1 lb per square foot product as a 2×4 wall having sheet rock on either side, just because of the density and mass that is introduced by it between the two spaces.

Door Seal Kit

It is a good idea to use door seal kits for stopping sound. The kits are a retro-fit product designed for installing onto the door and also the door jamb. For making the seal they provide a neoprene gasket. The jamb seal is fitted to the door frame and the door bottom is fitted with a spring loaded mechanism that seals the gap between the door bottom and the floor when the door is closed. There are two different kits, Standard Kit (1/2″ thick) and Heavy Duty kit (7/8″ thick). The installation of standard kit is usually onto a hollow-core door, and the heavy duty kit usually is installed onto a solid core door. The difference is made by the amount of gasket making the seal.

White Noise Machine

The white noise machine must be put in the room where the listeners are there and not in the room which is the source of the noise. The ambient noise level in the room is raised by the white noise machine so that it is hard to hear sound coming from other areas. It makes sound similar to small space heater or a small fan running – kind of a hum or a whir, or both combined. The space covered by each machine is no larger than 12″ × 12″.
