More to the point, there’s the bad way-crowding the room with couches and card tables, slapping down a treadmill in front of the TV, and calling it a day-and there’s the good way, which involves working toward a more attractive solution. And as an overall rule of thumb, you can achieve that more attractive solution by combining both informal and formal furnishings. That may sound like a recipe for disaster, but I can show you a few examples of how that unlikely mix can actually turn out very well. The first is a room I call the “Lion’s Den.” I designed it for Victor Marrero, the victim of two heart attacks, the second of which left him so disabled that he had to leave his job as a forklift operator.
Victor is a single dad who has been raising his five sons, ages fifteen to twenty, by himself since their mother left twelve years ago. The family lives in Camden, New Jersey, a place where most people struggle to get by and crime is a serious problem. So Victor had had his work cut out for him making sure that his sons didn’t fall victim to drugs and violence. And he’s done a great job. These five guys are terrific kids, and, while I have met a lot of families, I have never met one as tightly knit as the Marrero family.
They are like a football team. Victor has also helped out other parents by starting a group called Single Fathers of Camden to offer advice and support to dads. When I asked Victor what would have happened to his kids if he hadn’t been so vigilant, he said it would have been like throwing them into the lion’s den. So I came to think of the living room that I designed for them as a different kind of lion’s den-a place where the six of them could gather and stay safe.
