For instance, old weathered wood I found in the barn was cut, when life gives you wine, build wine racks. The glazed straw-yellow walls behind the bar give the old barn a Tuscan feel and the room a golden glow. The wine barrels, just for show, telegraph the message that good vintages are appreciated here. When you have the luxury of a lot of space, carving out intimate areas like this sitting arrangement makes the room seem more hospitable.

We gave the structure a new roof and its previous one of corrugated tin became the base of the bar (the top is recycled tile). Five old French oak wine barrels were propped against the wall purely because they looked very cool. But I also juxtaposed the rougher stuff with a classic leather sofa and matching chairs as well as some antique pieces that, while not fancy, are far more formal than the tin bar. The mix of casual and more refined pieces makes the room a really impressive place to throw a party but keeps it from feeling stuffy.
The family is still going to feel comfortable kicking back on the cozy cluster of furniture around the coffee table, throwing their feet up and watching a game on TV (there’s a set in the antique armoire). Some people believe that they actually think better in a messy office. I’m not one of them. When things are neat and well organized, my thinking is better organized, too. That’s why I’m a fan of offices that are fairly simple and make it easy to put things where they belong (or at least let you shove things out of sight for a while). If there was ever a family that needed a clean and simple office; it was the Kibes, who run a family farm in Iowa.
Farming is a messy business-believe me, after working on that project, I had the crusty boots to prove it-so their office needed to be an orderly place where the Kibes could get away from the mess and focus on the commercial side of their enterprise. The design of the space mirrors the rural nature of the business, yet many features of the office could work well in any home work space.
