THE INTIMATE RED GLOW of a sunset; the cozy feeling of flannel sheets; smooth as silk; cool blue. More than just words, colors and textures suggest ideas that have an emotional impact. Here are a few guidelines to help you evoke specific moods in your bathroom using color and texture. When we think of texture, we first think of touching something: a rough piece of bark, a smooth stone, a soft cotton towel. But texture also involves a visual response and memory, and this effect can be used in several different ways. For example, texture can be used to suggest different characteristics, such as masculinity (hard surfaces) or femininity (soft surfaces), simplicity (irregular and dull finishes), or refinement (even or shiny surfaces). Color is often the most memorable feature of an interior design, and our psychological reactions to it are linked to primitive associations with nature. Red, like fire, can suggest danger and is exciting. Blue, like ice, is mysterious and suggests calm. Yellow, like sunshine, is cheerful. Green is associated with plants and grass and is peaceful and mellow. Brown tones suggest our connection to the earth (see the top photo). In general, colors on the red side of the spectrum are thought to be warm, while colors on the blue side of the spectrum are thought to be cool. Colors toward the middle, like green, are considered neutral. Remember that colors are seen truly only in natural daylight, so artificial lighting has an effect on color as well, both by having its own color temperature and by its intensity (dim light tends to neutralize color).
